Mellben Signature

When someone brings up Mellben, i think crabs. Not any other normal butter or chili crab but the best crab beehoon in Singapore. A restaurant that has gotten everyone raving about for many years, Mellben has expanded from their Ang Mo Kio outlet to a new outlet at Prince Edward Road, which as of now (while i am writing this post) has a lesser queue and wait time as compared to their first outlet.

The new restaurant at Bestway Building has ample car park space, and a lot more seating capacity as compared to the original. And of course, the location is more centralized as well.

We started with the Seafood Beancurd Broth that was of the right consistency packed with seafood - crabmeat, fishmaw and beancurd. I liked it with a dash of vinegar but it was good on its own.

My favorite dish (apart from the crabs) was the Salted Egg Pork Ribs which i shamelessly requested for another serving. The pork ribs were evenly coated with a generous amount of salted egg and in all honesty it was impossible to stop at just one piece.

We were also served the XO Sauce Asparagus with Scallops which i quite liked as well. The asparagus wasn't overcooked and still retained its crunchiness.

A rather unique take to a fish dish was the Dragon Fruit Fish which comes with a tangy sauce with dragon fruit and melon balls topped on it. The fish was also deboned, which made it a lot easier to eat.

Hardly anyone leaves Mellben without trying their crabs. Their signature is the Claypot Crab Bee Hoon with a thick milky flavorful broth that makes everyone go for a second helping without fail. We also tried their Creamy Butter Crab which most of us liked as well. The rich flavor of the butter and curry leaves definitely hit the spot.

Ending the meal was Yam Paste with Gingko Nuts which they nailed as well. Thankfully, it wasn't overly sweet and the texture was smooth and just right.

While i am not sure if the prices are slightly more expensive at Mellben Singature (it is in town after all), the place to me looks pretty good, if not better than their Ang Mo Kio outlet. And of course, like i mentioned earlier, the wait time is a lot lesser. Because i am the kind that does not like queueing for food, i'll choose this over their other outlet, even if it means having to travel a bit further.
