1 Market

Undoubtedly the most popular Halal buffet in town, 1 Market has been raved about by many ever since its opening. With an array of dishes to offer, the buffet spread focuses on bringing the finest Asian cuisine with the freshest ingredients, following recipes by world acclaimed celebrity chef, Chef Wan.

The big buffet includes a section dedicated to fresh seafood such as crayfish, oysters and prawns. There is also a section with a wide range of Malay food such as Grilled Assorted Satays, Lebanese Chicken Rice and Chicken in Cashew Sauce, just to name a few.

One would most definitely be spoilt for choice at the seafood section with the assortment of fresh seafood. We particularly enjoyed the freshly shucked oysters that were very fresh and accompanied their in-house chilli very well. Another highlight would be the Whole Smoked Salmon, which is grilled as a whole and was lightly seasoned to retain its freshness.

At the noodle station, the freshly made on the spot Claypot Laksa is something you won't want to be missing out on either. The laksa gravy was rich and bursting with flavours, and was served with beancurd puffs which soaked up all the goodness of the gravy.

Moving on to the barbecue and cooked food section, be prepared to sink your teeth into Grilled Assorted Satays (Chicken and Beef) which were tender, well marinated, and charred at the right places. Another dish which we couldn't get enough of was the Grilled Squid which were very fresh and succulent despite being left on the grill.

And just like most or all buffets, the rule is always to save space for delectable desserts. At 1 Market, the desserts is as aplenty as the savoury food they have to offer. We found ourself indulging in Nonya Kuehs, cakes and puddings which we thought was the perfect way to end the meal.

1 Market runs full house on most days, due to their affordable prices and quality food they have to offer. Reservations are highly recommend to avoid disappointment and if there is a tip we want to share - starve before going for the big buffet, so that you can try everything and anything and not have to leave with regrets!

Ujong @ Raffles : Prosecco Brunch

If you ask me how an ideal weekend should be like, my answer would definitely be brunch. UJONG now offers a weekend Prosecco Bruch Buffet with free flow of Col De Salici Prosecco, and of course paired with the mod-sin dishes they have to offer. The a la carte brunch buffet runs from 11:30am - 2:30pm on Saturdays and Sundays.

Everything on the menu including their signature desserts are offered during their brunch, this includes their signature Nasi Lemak, as well as their Ba Chor Mee Pasta, which i have personally raved about on my previous post. If the day is too early to start on mains like those, fret not because they also have a selection of delectable breakfast options to choose from.

The simple dish of Chee Cheong Fun with Hae Bee Hiam certainly got my attention when it was served. The dried prawn floss was fragrant and complimented the soft silky rice rolls. It is also offered with 5 spice pork, which you might prefer if you like something less spicy on the tastebuds.

Again another local dish reinterperated, UJONG's version of our local carrot cake features cubes of homemade radish cake fried with egg and terrine. The Carrot Cake Terrine with Crispy Prawn Fritters were fluffy, soft and crispy on the outside, and the prawn fritters were a joy to dip with the different sauces that came with it. Personally, one of my favourite breakfast items on the menu.

The Corn Beef Hash Patties may first seem to look like our local version of eggs benedict, but not so after you have your first bite. The corn beef patties were flavourful with the right ratio of potatoes and corn beef and the sous vide eggs were cooked perfectly. The portions of the patties were pretty huge, which is also why we think this would make a hearty breakfast.

Of course, save space for dessert. As much as i love the Shendol, i also fell in love with the Puloh Hitam Pudding almost immediately. The warm moist steamed pudding resembles a sticky date pudding dessert, and i definitely enjoyed the homemade coconut ice cream, alongside the gula melaka butterscotch sauce that was served with it.

Like i mentioned at the start, everything on the menu is offered during brunch (including free flow Prosecco, if i may mention again). Priced at SGD119++ per pax, i would think UJONG is the place to be at on the weekends so you can drink and be merry over good food and ambience. Just like most places that serve up good food, reservations are recommend as they run quite full on weekends.

Khun Mee Thai

Khun Mee Thai, a new noodle bar and casual dining restaurant is a perfect example of the meaning 'to cook from your heart'. The concept at Khun Mee Thai isn't just about your serving up everyday Thai dishes such as Pineapple Fried Rice, Tom-Yum-Goong or Green Curry. Instead, it focuses on offering authentic Thai-Chinese street food, using ingredients sourced directly from the Land of Smiles, Thailand.

Helmed by Khun Aum, whose love for cooking brought her over to our sunny island, Khun Mee Thai is best known for their noodles, or more specifically Ba Mee. This local dish can be found almost at every corner in Thailand, and features a simple combination of egg noodles with dumplings and roasted pork.

At Khun Mee Thai, your selections for Ba Mee is aplenty. This ranges from Ba Mee Kiao to Ba Mee with Thai Green Curry to even Ba Mee with Tom Yam. We had a go at all three, and each bowl had their noodles cooked al dente. If you like your noodles dry, we highly recommend the Ba Mee Kiao, a dry version of the egg noodles tossed in a light fragrant sauce, topped with tender slices of roast pork. We did however, find the portion of the roast pork a little too scarce. If you like your food spicy, the Ba Mee with Tom Yam served with prawns is all for you.

If you like your carbs heavy like us, you should opt for the Khao Clook Ga-Pi, also known as Fried Rice with Shrimp Paste. The rice was bursting with flavours and textures from all the different ingredients such as sweet pork stew, crispy dried shrimp, green mango, chinese sausage and shallots put together.

Not the healthiest dish, but one of the highlights on the menu is the Kha Moo or Braised Pork Leg. Marinated for 2 hours and braised on slow heat for another 6 hours in their special sauce made in-house, this dish totally hit the right spot. We enjoyed the tenderness of the meat served on a bed of Thai Kai-lan which also soaked up the flavours of the sauce as well.

A popular bar snack in Bangkok, Khor Kai Tod is also served at Khun Mee Thai (and if we may say, goes extremely well with the beer they serve). The fried chicken cartilages are deep fried till golden brown and complimented the sweet chill served at the side. It is an acquired dish, but for us it was so addictive we had trouble stopping at one.

And there is no better way to end an authentic Thai meal than to have Mango with Sticky Rice - a classic Thai dessert. At Khun Mee Thai, the glutinous rice is pandan infused and served warm instead of room temperature. They also offer a durian version to cater our Singaporean tastebuds - a plus point for thoughtfulness.

Right from the first dish to the very last, we knew Khun Mee Thai isn't just another new Thai restaurant trying to fight for a placing in our competitive food and beverage scene. The dishes they offer impressed us both taste and presentation wise. The prices are extremely reasonable, especially since they currently do not have plans to charge GST nor service charge. We cannot wait for them to expand, but as of now, the east-siders can rejoice.

Joob Juice

It seems being healthy these days isn't just about eating the daily recommended serving of two serving of fruits daily. A much simpler and more efficient way is everything packed in a bottle - convenient, easy and exactly the same as eating a whole fruit, or even better. Joob Juice offers organic cold pressed juices that suits almost everyone. These juices are not only healthy, they also taste quite good and have lots of health benefits.

Joob Juice offers a 1-5 day detox programme designed for your comfort. For a start, you may want to start with a 1-day detox programme to get your body used to the whole 'liquid diet' and to also try out how it feels like. The recommended detox for optimal results is a 3-day detox programme which will be delivered in a 18 bottle cooler bag (perfect if you need to bring your juice out while you are on your errands). Their cold-pressed juices can last up to 3 days in the fridge, therefore if you opt for a 4-day or 5-day programme, your juices will be delivered twice.

The bottles are labelled 1 - 6 (by the order you should drink them throughout the day), one of my personal favourite is the Tangy Paradise (Bottle 2) which has orange, pineapple, cucumber and mint in it - perfect for the humid weather and extremely refreshing and citrusy. If you love your greens, you'll really love Green Machine (Bottle 1 and 3) - packed with spinach, kale, apple, cucumber, celery and lemon.

The Cleansorator (Bottle 4), filled with freshly squeezed lemon, agave and cayenne pepper is a good mid-day drink to perk you up. Back to fruits, the Rejuvenation (Bottle 5) consists of carrots, beetroot, pear, ginger, lemon and chlorella, which is a powerful detoxification tool. Last but not least is the Go Nuts (Bottle 6), a milk drink made from cashew nut, agave and vanilla - something to fill your stomach up so you won't go to sleep feeling hungry.

For those who are still skeptical with all the fruits, nuts and vegetables going into the different bottles, it is best for you to head over to their site to find out more. Joob Juice also offers Juice A La Carte which allows you to order 6 bottles of the same juice (for sharing, or for personal consumption) based on your liking. The detox programme can also be customised to your preference. For more information, you can head over to www.joob.sg. I guess all you need is 6 bottles a day to keep you healthy.
